From Scout’s foster family: Batemans Scout Hunter of the Valley (his AKC pedigree name) is a good boy, and as you can see, he is very handsome. Scout will be one year old next month. He is housetrained. He is current on his shots and has been neutered. We are not sure if he is current on heartworm or flea and tick meds since September of 2025, so he will need a heartworm test. He has been chipped, and his previous owner will be mailing his tags to us.

Scout’s energy level is through the roof, and he needs a lot of attention to keep him occupied. He and his puppy foster brother, who is the same age, play constantly, and we have to separate them to get them to rest. Scout doesn’t like to share toys, and he will take toys from other dogs. He loves to play fetch and tug rope. He is very smart and trainable. He has also had some puppy classes. The commands he knows are Sit, Come, Down, No, and Off. His previous owner also used “Nose off the table.”

At first there was some anxiety separation anxiety when his foster dad left the house, but it was not bad, as Scout was not alone. We were warned that Scout has a tendency to throw up when he rides in the car. We have taken him on four rides, and he has woofed his cookies three times. The last time we made sure he didn’t have anything in his tummy, but he still got sick. The vet said he would grow out of this.

It was reported that Scout is stubborn, and that he jumps up and counter surfs. We have not seen these behaviors, but there was one instance when he grabbed a non-food item off the dresser and started to chew on it. We would not trust him around reachable food at all at this stage of his young life. He also needs to be watched around plants, both indoors and out, as he will dig them up and eat them.

We have taken Scout to various dog parks, and he is very good with other dogs. His previous owner said he should not be around cats, and was not sure about children, but I would say that this boy would be good with kids. He still needs some leash training. So far he has been very quiet, and he has only barked when someone has walked past the house. Concerning kennels, the former owner said he is an escape artist, and she had to reinforce a kennel to keep him in. The first night we put him in a kennel, in the room with us, and he slept fine. Since then we have let him sleep where he chooses to in our room with the door shut, and he has not caused any problems. We haven’t tried to kennel him again at this point, as he has not been left alone.

Scout, like all young dogs, has a great deal of potential and will thrive with guidance and training. It would be best for him to be with people who are home more often than not, at least until he gets older. Most of all, Scout needs a Forever Family who will love and care for him for his whole life, and tend to his various wants and needs. If you think that family might be yours, please fill out an Adoption Application and then contact his case manager via the form below. Scout would love to meet you!
