Another Springer who is the epitome of the breed we love so much! Roz’s foster mom has been a volunteer for many years, and she says Roz is one of her all-time favorite foster dogs. The best words to describe Roz are exuberant, silly, playful, loving and loyal. Roz has had a lot of training and she’s a very well-behaved girl — it’s just that her excitement is sometimes hard to contain!
Roz is a “big & beautiful” girl with a heavy coat that will require regular grooming. She has exhibited no problems at the groomer, by the way. She’s strong, confident and smart. Roz has great communication skills with other dogs and gets along with big, small, young and old dogs. She loves to play, play, play, but she won’t pester an older dog. She will submit to the male Springer in her foster home, and she loves to snuggle with him. She’s happy being part of a pack and does not show any jealousy with other dogs or people — she just wants to be in on the lovin’.
Roz is house trained and crate trained, although there’s no need to crate her. She loves being outdoors, especially in cool weather, but she’s not really interested in chasing squirrels. When she saw a herd of deer, however, she let out a boisterous bark to alert everyone within a one-mile radius that something scary was passing by.
Roz has free range of the house, sleeps with the whole pack in her foster mom’s bed and has had no issues. She does need to be fed separately from other dogs as she can be protective of her food. She sits politely for treats (even high value treats) and waits her turn. She takes treats very gently from your hand. She will also guard food from people so you must keep everything pushed back on the kitchen counter. If she steals it, it’s hers. A trading protocol may work if the item you’re offering is of higher value. She will allow you to take a toy, sock, etc. from her mouth. Because of her history with food, we will not place her in a home with children. We simply don’t want to set her up to fail. She loves men and women equally and is friendly with strangers.
Roz needs a home that has experience with Springers, particularly the confidence we often see in the breed. She needs someone who understands positive reinforcement, rather than using force such as grabbing her collar. Without the proper handling, resource guarding can escalate. The only thing she guards is food, so it is manageable in the right setting.
Are you an experienced dog owner familiar with Springers? Then Roz might be the right companion for you!
