Meet Lorelei!

We saw a social media post looking for help for this sweet girl. We know she’s not a purebred Springer, but she needed help and we had a wonderful volunteer step up to foster Lorelei. So, we took the plunge.

Lorelei was adopted from a humane society at the age of one. They had advertised her as a spaniel/greyhound mix, but we believe that to be a guess. She shows absolutely no signs of greyhound. A young woman who used to live with Lorelei confiscated her from her mother after severe neglect was taking place. Over a few weeks, she worked on Lorelei’s coat and eating situation.

Lorelei currently weighs 37 pounds and could ideally weigh 45. She recently saw the vet to get some things updated and got a clean bill of health. Our vet believes that Lorelei was kept confined for excessively long periods of time, most likely laying in urine and feces. She has pressure spots/stains/sores on nearly every joint, including the vertebrae of her tail, and signs of recent skin irritations that are not due to fleas. She now shows no signs of skin irritations or allergies now that she’s been in a better environment. The young woman cut Lorelei’s coat very short in an attempt to get her in better condition. She stated that her hair is normally much longer (how beautiful she will be!)

Despite a rocky patch recently, Lorelei exuded confidence as she has settled into her foster home. Not much upsets her, including storms and strange environments like a new car to ride in, a new foster home, the dog park or the vet office. She seems unfazed and enthusiastic about experiencing new smells and possibilities. The downside to this is that she is a little too confident (and bossy) when meeting new dogs and trying to initiate play. With guidance and supervision, she is absolutely fine around other dogs. Most importantly, she obeys commands like a pro. She will immediately stop a behavior when told to do so. In fact, she often keeps her eyes on her foster mom or dad, waiting for direction.

Having said that, Lorelei is an absolute Velcro dog. She’s not a huge “in-your-lap” cuddler, but she MUST be near and stay with her humans. One of her favorite things is to potty in the morning and then go back to bed and sleep in next to her foster mom. Her love of close contact with her humans can lead to gate jumping if left in one part of the house while the human goes to another. This also leads to excessive barking when crated and left alone. A Ring camera tells us that she does eventually calm down and lay down, but even a peanut-butter-filled bone doesn’t deter her barking when left in a crate. When left out of the crate with the room’s door shut for 30 minutes, she did MUCH better with little to no barking and no destructive behavior. Because of the barking when her people leave, we don’t think a condo or apartment home environment would be the best place for Lorelei.

It appears Lorelei “clings” to one person initially and she might be slightly leery of new people, but she warms up to strangers incredibly quickly. She particularly fell in love with another young woman who visited her foster home.

Lorelei is looking for a Forever Home where she will be able to be with her people whenever possible.

Please submit an Online Adoption Application if you are interested in Lorelei. It is always the first step in our adoption process.
