Meet Felix! This boy is very sweet. He came to ESRA when his original owner wasn’t able to care for him anymore, and we were glad to be able to help.

We think that Felix will thrive in a more rural setting than he has now. While he is getting better in the house, he runs circles and barks when he is outside. He is joyous and loud about getting out to play! He would benefit from a good area to run and/or a good, long walk daily.

Felix lives in a foster home with other dogs, and he does tend to play rough. Therefore, a smaller, timid dog might be uncomfortable with Felix.

This handsome boy will do best in a home with adults. One thing to note is that Felix has glaucoma, and he takes eyedrops to manage the pressure in his eye. He will need eyedrops throughout his life. He can be a little clumsy, likely due to his lack of depth perception, and he may run into things or people. Felix is mouthy, but he does not bite. It’s likely due to his vision issue: he will miss the target and get fingers.

Our boy is a masterful counter surfer! He will sit quietly for his food, without jumping or barking, and he will wait his turn with the other dogs. But leave a morsel of food unattended, and suddenly it is gone!

Felix also loves toys, and he hopes that his new home will have a toybox for him to play with. But of course his biggest wish is to find his true Forever Family, who will give him the love and care he needs and deserves. If you think that family might be yours, please fill out an online Adoption Application and then contact his case manager via the form below. Felix would love to meet you!

Update from Felix’s foster mom, 2/3/2026: I just got back from a visit to Iowa to see my family. As a trial, I took Felix with me. He did fantastic!

Many of his behaviors we see here we did not see while we were at my mom’s. Felix happily followed all of us (my mom, sisters, and BIL) around, and he was not glued to my side like he is at home. He rarely barked, and he got along with my mom’s cats and my sister’s three little dogs. After this weekend, I am convinced that he will be fine as an only dog.  He will do well with other dogs when going for group walks or interacting at the dog park.

My mom lives on a four-acre property. We started Felix on a training lead, then graduated to dragging a leash, and finally got as far as off leash. He chased the little birds off the deck and around the yard, but he came quickly when I called him. He was perfect! I think he will do just fine without a fenced yard.

We walked every day, on and off leash, and except for sniffing out some wild turkeys, he stayed close to us. The turkeys were in the woods, but when we got his attention and called him back to us, he came like a champ! When he was on leash, he did a nice loose-leash walk.

The one behavior that we weren’t able to fix was his counter surfing. He is quick; he got me twice and my mom once! Good thing it was just bread and cheese.

Anyway, this weekend was a good test!
