Our newest California bonded pair would like to introduce themselves to you!
Hello! My name is Bentley, an eight-years-young, black-and-white, bench-bred English Springer Spaniel. I am a happy, middle-aged guy with just the right amount of energy and mellowness, so you could say that I really am the perfect dog! I am part of what the dog world calls a “bonded pair,” so I am pleased to introduce you to my bestest friend, Barkley. Recently, our world was quite shaken when our owner became unable to care for us any longer. Believe us, we loved him very much and were his constant companions. We are a pair of good-natured gentlemen who are looking for a wonderful Forever Family that will enjoy our sweetness and allow us to stay together, as it is meant to be.
Hi, folks! I’m Barkley, the other half of best-friends pair Bentley and Barkley, also affectionately known as B&B. I am very similar to Bentley at eight years young. I am a cocker spaniel with a gorgeous jet-black, silky coat and a bit of white on my chest. As Bentley mentioned above, since we are the best of friends, we must be adopted together. We are both very friendly guys. We really miss having a human or two of our own and, like most Velcro spaniels, we are affection motivated, and we love to snuggle! If you invited us to sleep on the bed with you, we would be over the moon!
From B&B’s case manager:
Although we do not know a lot about this pair of spaniels, we do know that they would thrive with a basic obedience class or with someone who is committed to training them. As with many of the rescue dogs that ESRA brings in, we do not know all of their exact behaviors, so we encourage all prospective adopters to commit to the training of their newly adopted dogs. This will increase the dogs’ self-confidence and improve their manners. Because these boys are being re-homed as middle-aged dogs, it is especially important that they know whom to look to for assurance and guidance when they are in an unsure situation.
The boys were taken to ESRA’s veterinary partner where they both were vaccinated, tested negative for heartworm, and microchipped. They had full dental exams, during which Bentley had extractions but Barkley did not. Both boys had been neutered in the past.
Bentley had large, golf ball-size callouses on both elbows. They were easily removed under anesthesia. We believe these callouses were caused over many years of living and sleeping on concrete with no cushioning. Like many of us older folk, Bentley has developed arthritis in both elbows and is now being treated with an anti-inflammatory medication along with joint supplements. Bentley is a super sweet Springer who loves attention and treats. He is also a vocal boy who likes to tell you about everything that is going on around him!
Barkley came in with recent vet records showing that he had been treated frequently over the past several months for horrible ear infections that would not clear up. At our vet’s office, it was noticed that Barkley’s ears constantly had a nasty, bloody discharge, even after cleaning. Upon consultation with a specialist who estimated that this had been going on for years, it was decided that Barkley had suffered long enough. He therefore underwent surgery to remove both ear canals, as this is the only cure for his infections. This procedure, called TECA (total ear canal ablation), revealed lots of nasty discharge and embedded foxtails behind his ear drums. This procedure has, of course, left him completely deaf, but he is now also 100% pain free. We feel that this operation has saved him a lifetime of pain, and it will also save his adopters a lifetime of expensive vet bills for trying to treat the infection. Once Barkley has his post-surgery recheck, no other special care will be needed. Working with a trainer to teach both him and his adopter hand signals is a must for Barkley’s transition into a world without sound. Bentley’s presence will be an enormous help and comfort to Barkley, as they have been together their entire lives. On a positive note, Barkley’s deafness means that he sleeps deeply all night long, doesn’t bark like crazy when the doorbell rings, and doesn’t come running when the potato chip bag is opened!
B&B are extremely sweet boys who crave human attention. They love playing with balls and toys, chasing birds and yard critters (no cats or small animals in their new home, please!), and swimming. These boys absolutely need someone home most of the time in order to receive the attention and love they crave and have missed in the past. They will need a large, securely fenced yard in which to play, sniff, and lounge with their humans.
Are you ready to double your daily quota of spaniel love? These boys are available for adoption now, and they are very eager to find their true Forever Home. Please note that an approved online Adoption Application is the first step in a more thorough interview process that is designed to match each dog to exactly the right family, and that the final decision rests with the dog’s case manager.
