Walk a Mile...

Walk a mile in my shoes, walk a mile in my shoes,
And before you abuse, criticize, and accuse,
Walk a mile in my shoes...
      - Joe South, 1969 -

So many families can no longer care for their Springers because of a personal financial crisis.

While we may never know all the reasons behind their loss, the fact remains that some great dogs are being euthanized in shelters all over the country simply as a result of someone not being able to financially keep them as part of the family.

Rather than judge them for their inability to keep their family intact, we invite you to "walk a mile in their shoes", feel the very real tragedy of having to part with their beloved pets, and then do something to allow ESRA to assist those pets to find new loving homes.

ESRA is also feeling the difficult financial times. The numbers of dogs needing our care is increasing every day, veterinary costs are rising, and our donors are facing the difficult economy too.

Three members of the English Springer Spaniel Field Trial Association (ESSFTA), Marti Nickoli , Beth Fink, and Joan Beck realized what could happen to the future of Springer rescue in these uncertain times, and decided to take action to help by organizing the "Walk a Mile for Rescue" campaign. They launched it at the 2008 ESSFTA National Springer Specialty in Arlington, Texas, in late October. Attendees generously gave them donations and wore the bright yellow buttons on their matching yellow T-shirts proudly! Now, you can too!

Won't you help our homeless Springers, by participating in ESRA's "Walk a Mile for Rescue" program. Any donation will help, and with the funds raised, we will continue to care for those who were lost to their homes due to no fault of their own.

Can you help?                         WILL you help?

The compassion of the old Native American saying
"I pray that I may not judge a man, until I have walked a mile in his shoes"
is needed now more than ever.

Springer rescue groups have experienced a year like no other.  As the economy continues to sour, and layoffs, soaring costs, and the mortgage crisis force people from their homes, many individuals are facing some of the toughest decisions of their lives.  For many, the loss of a job or home means moving into an apartment, or worse into shelters or living on the streets and having to give up their cherished family pets.  As much as the thought of surrendering a precious Springer Spaniel is unthinkable for those of us dedicated to this breed, it is a choice that more and more people have made in the last year.  Fortunately, English Springer Rescue America and our network of volunteers provide a safe haven for these beloved pets. But the massive influx of dogs is sapping the resources of our organization as program costs increase at an alarming rate.  We hope this crisis will be short lived, but right now we need your help more than ever.  Please take a look at the information on this page and than look into your hearts and pocketbooks and help us make a difference.

Did you know that:

In 2008, ESRA alone expects more than 1,500 dogs to come into our program?

Foster homes pay the food bills for these dogs, but the approximately $300 per dog cost of veterinary expenses and other supplies is paid by ESRA.

We can make a difference for homeless Springers across this continent.  Whether they come from pedigreed show or field backgrounds, or just someone's back yard, these dogs lives are in jeopardy through no fault of their own.
Look for the boots and wear our button proudly!
