Winston is an adorable Springer mix. (We think one parent may have been Border Collie.) Winston was an owner surrender to a local shelter at six months of age, but spent only one night there before being rescued by ESRA. No reason was given for surrender; however, shortly after rescuing him, it was obvious that he had a pretty significant congenital heart murmur. He has recently undergone two heart surgeries at the NC State Vet School, and seems undaunted by the whole procedure. His follow-up appointment indicated that the surgery was successful, and that Winston should be just like any other pup, and should live a long and healthy life. He currently takes heart medication to improve the function of his heart. If his final cardiology check-up in September indicates that he is continuing to do well, the medication can be discontinued. He will also need to wait until after that checkup before he can be neutered. To date, Winston's medical bills are over $1900. He is on heartworm preventive, and is in very good health. He will make a truly wonderful addition to a very lucky family.

Winston really enjoys being with people, and has totally fallen in love with his foster family. He loves going for rides in the car, and has fairly good leash skills. He loves any and all attention, and is usually very friendly with strangers. He is housebroken, and immediately learned to use our doggie door without any hesitation. He is smart and learns quickly! He does not chew shoes or furniture (thank goodness!), and is not a big chewer in general (he defies the definition of "Puppy" in that sense!). He sleeps in our bedroom snuggled next to his foster dad, or at the foot of the bed, and is a quiet sleeper. Because he does not chew, is housetrained, and stations well for sleeping, we have not confined him to a crate.
