Meet little Trio, a handsome Springer puppy
pulled from a Dallas-area shelter at the last minute by another rescue group who saw him. They called ESRA and gave us this
spunky little black and white boy with a full tail. He still had some of his baby teeth, so we think he's about five months
old.
Trio was not in the shelter's adoption program because he was limping and carrying his left rear paw. They thought
nobody would want him in that condition. We originally thought he had suffered some sort of trauma. Upon closer inspection
by our vet, we realized he was actually born with a very misshapen paw! Most of the pad was missing, there was only one
complete toe, bone was poking through the bottom, and it was oozing blood on a regular basis.
We tried to give it a chance to heal, but it readily became apparent that all that paw did was make little Trio's life
miserable! He'd cry if he bumped it the wrong way, and he'd carry it most of the time anyway. We made the decision to go
ahead and amputate his leg. The vet explained that the best place to amputate for both looks and functionality was about
mid-thigh. Trio's vet care for this procedure was expensive, but well worth it. He will lead a very normal life, much more
comfortably without that painful paw bothering him.
Update,
Christmas 2004: Trio is healing well, and he seems to have had a quite good Holiday. He received many toys,
which he eschews in favor of decorative trim, furnishings and books. Pretty much anything made of wood. Or derivatives of
wood. In order: He has eaten the sidelight window sill by the front door; part of Kim's Georgia O'Keefe coffee table book;
the lower front edge of our vintage deco vanity; and most likely, things we've yet to discover. All in all, I'd say he's a
happy dog. He feels that this is his home, and he has the right to eat it. Fortunately, ours is a large house, so we may be
able to retain enough space under roof to survive the winter.
