I was taken to the vet's to be euthanized by my owners because I have allergies, and a skin condition probably caused by the allergies and a low thyroid. I sure didn't deserve that! The nice vet tech called ESRA and told them I was the sweetest little guy who deserved a second chance. Well, I'm not exactly a little guy, but I sure am sweet! I am as laid back as they come. I love car rides, don't mind the groomer, and I love to kiss everyone with my big sloppy tongue! Right now, ESRA says I'm a "special needs" boy, because my allergy testing costs a LOT of money, but we want to see if we can get to the bottom of this so-called skin condition and let me lead a normal life.

Notice the hair on my chest is a little thin? Whatever it is that I'm allergic to is causing me to scratch it raw, and I'm too nice a dog to deserve this!

Meanwhile, I'd sure love a home in the Dallas area to call my very own! I'm house trained and I have very good manners. I'd love to find my very own "spot" in your heart!

A note from Spot's ESRA coordinator: We took Spot in for allergy testing, and he is allergic to 5 grasses, one mold, 5 weeds, 3 trees, cat dander, staph and dust mites. Whew! We're starting him on an allergy shot regimen that will be weekly for 8 weeks, biweekly for 8 weeks and monthly after that. After 6 months we'll see whether it has helped or not. His thyroid was determined to be within the normal range, so he is now off the thyroid meds. We've also put him on IVD duck and potato food to cover the bases. He has shown some improvement, but he's still an itchy boy. We're waiting now for the allergy shots to have an effect, which may take a couple of months.

Update 11/5/03: His foster mom reports that he takes his baths very well and is very good about taking his allergy shots. She says he parks at her feet wherever she goes in the house and wiggles his springer butt at everyone he meets. He did have a little flare up this past week, and had to go to the vet. The vet said that many animals with allergies are suffering this time of year in Texas, and she was not surprised to see Spot affected. She changed his antihistamines a little bit, and sent him home. It will be some time before we see the actual effect of his new allergy shots, as they are increased very gradually over time. We'll know if they're really helping him in a few months. Thanks again for taking the time to care about him!

Update 12/7/04: To the wonderful folks who have helped our Spot out for the past year, I have some very happy news! Spot has been permanently adopted by his foster mom and dad this month. While they will deal with his allergy issues for the rest of his life, we have at least been able to figure out what causes them. It is because all of you have taken the time to care for this very sweet boy who was dumped at his vet's to be euthanized, he will go on to have a happy life with the new family he loves so much. On behalf of ESRA and Spot, I want to thank each and every one of you for your assistance. I wish you and your families the best of holiday seasons!
