Although
Sawyer is young and healthy, he's had more than his share of temporary
health problems. He came to us with such a terrible ear infection, we
had to sedate him to deep clean his ears. Massive infections were found
in both ears, with one ear drum perforated. Both ears will heal and he
hears normally. He had a jagged, broken canine tooth that had rotted up
into his sinus cavity, with a nasty, dripping infection that was stopped
before it became too critical. That has healed over nicely. Sawyer had
a heartworm infection, which has been treated and he will be able to resume
normal activity in early December. He will need normal heartworm prevention
for the rest of his life. All of the above afflictions are part of Sawyer's
past now. His PRA (progressive retinal atrophy) is permanent, but it does
not mean he won't be a healthy boy. Here is a link to better explain his
disease: Progressive
Retinal Atrophy .
One thing
that has not suffered at all is Sawyer's attitude! Sawyer is a very social
boy who loves everyone he meets; he enjoys canine company as well. He
is easygoing and likes to walk on the leash. One benefit is that he rarely,
if ever, pulls at the leash. He takes his time and enjoys all the interesting
doggie sniffs on his walks. He greets everyone with lots of doggie kisses
and a wag of his tail. Another dog to keep him company and eventually
help as his "eyes" would be ideal. PRA will be a part of Sawyer
forever, but that doesn't mean he can't have a wonderful life with the
right family.
