Roscoe – Columbia, TN

ESRA Special Needs Springer

ESRA #2009-0386AR
Age: 6 years
Gender: Male
Color: Liver/White

Sadly, Roscoe was unable to overcome the multiple traumas of his past, and we had to make the decision to help him across the Bridge. Thank you so much to everyone who helped to make his last few months to be spent in a place of safety and comfort, with his pain eased. A big hug to Sloane and Louie, his foster parents, for all they did for him.

How glad we are that Roscoe is in ESRA's care! This beautiful boy came to ESRA after a rough couple months running loose in AR. He had a family, but they didn't keep him safely in their house with them, so he would run at will. One time he strayed a little too far and was lost for 4 months. During this time he ran into trouble and was shot with a shotgun in his front leg.

Amazingly he made it home, but not until the wound was old, infected, and the bone was beginning to reset itself improperly. He was taken to the vet and amputation was recommended. His family decided they could not afford this surgery and left him in the care of the clinic.

An angel of a vet tech sought us out and asked for help. Once he was in our care, we determined that it may be possible to save his leg and began working towards that end. Currently the infection is being treated and Roscoe has been sporting a corrective splint to help realign the bone and prevent further muscle atrophy.

Once Roscoe's leg is healed, we will be able to treat him for heartworm, and then begin looking for his new home. Roscoe is a great boy who is worth all the energies we put into his rehab.

Please stay tuned as we update you on Roscoe's progress!

UPDATE: MAY 7, 2009 Roscoe should have been named Rascal! Our beautiful boy doesn't seem to realize that his leg is broken! His leg had been healing nicely until a few days ago when he suffered a setback and broke his leg again! The section of bone that had healed was very fragile and couldn't withstand his typical Springer antics, despite his foster parents vigilant care.

Because his leg is again in jeopardy we're pursuing surgery immediately. The surgery will place a metal plate in Roscoe's leg to support the bone while it continues to heal. The plate will limit the range of motion in his ankle, but it will provide a stable footing for his leg.

Please keep Roscoe in your thoughts on this next part of his journey.
