Riley – Raleigh, NC
ESRA Special Needs Springer

ESRA #2011-804 NC
Age: 5
Gender: Male
Color: Liver and white
A shelter can be a scary place for a frightened dog, but it's not as scary as being out on the streets. And when that shelter has an angel fighting to keep a dog off "the list" that dog is a lucky dog indeed. Riley is one of those lucky dogs. He has a physical disability that some would assume made him unfit to live a happy life, but someone at the shelter knew better and gave him a chance. Now ESRA is prepared to help this handsome boy and get him on the road to being the best Springer he can be.
Two veterinarians who have examined Riley have determined that neurological damage to his front left leg from an old injury has rendered it useless. The leg is dead, lifeless. It is a burden and a hindrance to Riley, not a help, so it must be amputated. We have seen many an ESRA dog go through similar surgeries and come out on the other side as happy, well-adjusted, easily mobile, strong dogs. Riley we are sure will be one of those dogs and will be glad to join the ranks of the "Tripod Club."
His surgery is scheduled for September 2 so his Labor Day holiday will be spent in the early stages of recuperation. He will also be neutered at the same time. Once recuperated from those procedures, he will undergo treatment for his heartworm.
This little fellow will have a rough road ahead, but we have promised him a good life and these are the first necessary steps to getting him there. Your support and good wishes will be most appreciated. Riley will be grateful we're sure!
UPDATE 9/10/11: RILEY IS LOOKING GOOD! Take a look at this handsome fellow! And boy, if you could see him in person you'd know just how happy he is to be rid of that albatross! He wonders why we originally said "this little fellow will have a rough road ahead" — he sees nothing but happy days and the freedom to be a Springer! He joined ESRA Carolinas at a recent public event and was a model gentleman. He had his foster mom and foster brother with him as well as lots of other ESRA volunteers and ambassador Springers. Everyone was amazed at how well-adjusted he is and how very handsome! Riley is looking very good.
He does still have his heartworm treatment to go through so one problem in his future is trying to figure out how to keep him quiet and still for the weeks he needs to be quiet and still. It will be important for his full recovery so please send him good sound advice and help us get him to understand. On the other side of his recuperation, he will be free to be the Springer he is!
UPDATE 2/1/12: RILEY IS HOME FOREVER!
Hey there folks, It's Riley here! I want to thank everyone for all of the love and support you gave me during my recovery from my leg surgery and my heartworm treatment!
I am now a perfectly healthy dog — and I'd challenge any of you four-legged Springers to a race and bet I'd win! — I'm heartworm free and so happy in my Forever Home. Turns out I've been there since I left that scary shelter! My Foster Mom and Dad felt we had gone through too much together to ever give me up! And I have a great brother who has already been living the good life for several years because of ESRA. We're one happy family! Life is good!
Love to all of you, Riley!
