Popeye is a Springer Spaniel that was set out in a rural area. A good Samaritan found him with serious injuries. She couldn't just let him suffer. Her vet treated his cherry eye and also had to amputate his left rear leg because it was shattered beyond repair. The good news is that he has been checked for heart worms and is negative.

His foster mom, Sandra, says, "Popeye is a pleasure. He's polite, smart, and already loyal, though we've only had him three weeks. Due to his misfortunes, I would expect him to be aggressive or moody, but he is neither. He is laid-back, quiet, and happy. He is very affectionate and kissy with us and our other dogs, however he is protective and will bark if someone comes to the door. He loves the outdoors and needs room to run, yes, even on three legs! I think he would do best in a home with other dogs and/or kids. Popeye's amputation and previous bad luck have not slowed him down, nor do they affect his ability to make a great pet. He will clean up nicely. He can't have a bath just yet because of his wounds. We have found out that he loves to have his hair brushed. So after his stitches are gone, he'll get a handsome grooming."

He's about 30 pounds and excellent with the other four female dogs in the household. Great with the cat too. Popeye loves to ride in the car and seems housetrained and right-at-home in the house. He also is crate-trained. We expect him to make a full recovery and he'll be looking for the just the right home to love in.

Update, April 28, 2004: His foster mom says, "He is going to make a very good pet for someone. He went back to the doctor today, and he is still in the collar for another week. She wants to make sure the eye is OK. She said his leg is 100%. He gets around great. She is going to see him again next Monday. She thinks the eye should be fine then. He is still getting the eye drops for now. Louisa, one of the ESRA volunteers, came over to meet Popeye and she thought he was great! She said he would make a good example for handicapped people, with his leg and the way he has adjusted with it! "
