Peanut, fondly nicknamed "Little Nut" by her foster family, has had a rough couple of months. Shortly after her spay procedure, her foster mom noticed that Peanut had become lethargic, had a high fever and blood in her stools. The local vet ran many different tests trying to determine the cause. For ten days, Peanut's foster parents fed and hydrated her through a syringe. They did everything they could to keep her alive and comfortable while waiting for test results. Her weight dropped to 12.5 lbs and her fever spiked to 105.9°. The following Saturday morning, Peanut fell extremely ill and was rushed to the hospital. The surgeons and specialists performed emergency surgery and found her stomach/abdomen area to be completely infected (white blood cell count abnormally high). They also discovered that her spleen had fused to her liver. Peanut's body was naturally trying to separate the two organs, causing the spleen to rip and bleed. The surgeons removed Peanut's spleen, repaired her liver and cleaned out the infection. It was a miracle that Peanut survived the ordeal prior to her surgery. She spent a few days in the hospital recuperating, healing her body and gaining back her weight.
On the mend, Peanut's life began anew after the surgery. She got her energy back and enjoyed playing with her foster parents, dogs and children — she especially loves to play "tug" with her foster sister and their purple squeaky dog toy! But a few weeks later, Peanut suffered another set-back. She came down with pneumonia — due to aspiration — and was placed on a five-week medication regimen. The vet recommends that when the treatment is complete, Peanut should undergo a esophagoscopy to determine what possibly caused the aspiration. Endoscopy/esophagoscopy is a procedure where a camera is used to evaluate a dog's esophagus, stomach and intestine. Not only would the vet be able to determine if there is a stricture (scarring/narrowing of the esophagus) in Peanut, but would also be able to obtain biopsies of her organs to get a good prognosis for her future.
With a few more medical procedures possibly in her future, Peanut is still not "out of the woods" yet, but ESRA has promised to raise the money needed to give Peanut the best medical care available and to find her the perfect Forever Home as soon as she is is ready!
