Molly may well be the most perfect dog you will ever meet. She is friendly,
well mannered, loves kids, gets along very well with other dogs, loves
to swim and play fetch and has a very shiny coat. She has instantly charmed
everyone she has met, including her crotchety old foster brothers and
sisters. Her looks are deceiving-those sad spaniel eyes melt your heart
and conceal her happy go lucky spirit.
She came into foster care after being hit by a car. One hip was dislocated
and her owners were unable to afford the care she needed. A caring vet
tech, smitten by her wonderful disposition, asked if they would be willing
to surrender her to rescue and contacted ESRA.
Despite
the week's delay in treatment, the surgeon was able to manipulate Molly's
hip back into place and was very optimistic about it remaining stable.
However, it was not to be. She was playing with the other resident dogs,
yelped and came running to her foster mom, and she could feel that it
was not right. It had popped back out again. She was scheduled to go back
in for surgery, and the surgeon performed a Femoral Head Ostectomy (FHO),
in which the femoral head was removed. The ball at the top of her femur
was removed, so that it will never come out of the socket again and cause
her pain. Scar tissue will form at the top of the bone, to form a new
"socket" in the muscle and she is expected to regain nearly
complete mobility over time. For this to work well, she will need to always
keep off the pounds, and a lifetime of weight-watching is the result.
She again has to be less active than she would like and is getting physical
therapy twice a day for several months to help her to regain maximum function
and mobility If all goes well, her recovery is expected to take six to
eight weeks.
Your sponsorship of an ESRA Special Needs dog enables us to rehabilitate
a great one like Molly. Without your donations, we wouldn't be able to
afford the staggering vet bills to save these truly wonderful dogs. Thank
you!
