This is Mildred, a beautiful black and white bench bred female Springer. Millie was found on May 22nd by Amy Rogers, president of the DFWESSA, three doors down from her house. Apparently Millie was dumped shortly before she was found, and subsequently hit by a car. She was taken to the emergency vet's that night. She was found to have a dislocated hip, a little road rash, and possible torn ligaments in her left leg. She took a hard bump to her head in the accident and experienced some localized swelling, but it subsided completely overnight. It was determined she did not sustain any permanent head injuries. Millie's hip was put back into its socket and into a bandage to see if it would hold permanently. After 10 days the bandage was removed, and the hip popped right back out. This occurs approximately 80% of the time. Our next step will be FHO (femoral head ostectomy)
surgery. This surgery will enable her to eventually get around almost as if she had never been injured. At the same time, Millie will be spayed and some mammary tumors removed. The good news is that this Texas girl
is heartworm negative! It will be determined whether her left leg will need further attention after we get past this hurdle. Millie is extremely tolerant of pain and very loving with every person she meets. She is very quiet in her little suite, where we have had to keep her as still as possible. Her long-term prognosis is quite good, due to her
relative good health and young age.

We have not had much time to allow her near other dogs, but it was made apparent at Amy's house that she probably did not like cats.

We'll be able to see how she interacts with other pets when she is further along in her recovery process. Millie will greet you with a wiggle of the tail and a friendly lick when you approach. She will very gently take a treat from your hand, especially if it's a Nilla Wafer (don't tell the vet!). Millie will be an excellent addition to somebody's family in the near future.

Update! 6/8/02

Millie's FHO surgery was very successful. At the same time, we spayed her, removed an umbilical hernia, removed a mammary tumor, and completed a precautionary mastectomy. We sent the mammary tumor in for biopsy, and the results were benign. What a relief! She has done a little hydrotherapy in the hot tub, and has started taking walks around the block. She is just starting to put some weight on that leg, and is using it for balance. It will be awhile before she regains complete use of it.

Millie-aka "Silly Millie"-is probably the happiest springer we've ever met. She never stops wagging!

We've discovered that she loves other dogs and doesn't mind cats, either. She loves to play and fetch the tennis ball, too. She crates very well-it's obvious she's familiar with them and is completely housetrained. Millie absolutely loves bed privileges any time of the night or day. She is a real cuddle bug!
