We hope Max in Missouri will one day have happy memories of his bad Thanksgiving Day in 2010. On that day, he found himself in an Animal Control Shelter hoping for help after being hit by a car and dragged down the road. Happily ESRA came to his aid and now has him under the expert care of a veterinary clinic.

The first course of action was to get his leg cleaned and x-rays taken to assess the extent of the damage. Thankfully the only broken bone was a toe. but the problem is the size of the wound and the fact that he didn't receive proper veterinary care for many days. The wound had to be reopened, cleansed, and packed. It cannot be resutured. It will have to heal by secondary intention which is only accomplished by cleaning and packing twice a day. The wound is basically like his leg went through a meat grinder.

He will be required to stay in a veterinary clinic with trained vet staff to sedate him to clean and care for the wound on a daily basis until it is healed. The leg is expected to heal nicely over time and he will regain full use if properly cared for.

Sadly, in doing all the preliminary blood work required to care for his injury, ESRA has learned Max is also Heartworm and Ehrilichiosis positive which will require additional expensive treatment to cure. First we'll get his leg on the way to being healed, then he will need to start his Heartworm and Ehrilichiosis treatments.

Max will make a great companion for a happy family as soon as he is well. In the meantime he will need lots of support and financial assistance from ESRA friends who wish all the best for him.

12/16/10 UPDATE: Have you heard the news? Missouri Max has moved to Chicago, IL! He is now in a foster home very experienced with dealing with the challenges Max is facing as he recovers from his injury. He will also stay in Chicago as he undergoes treatment for his other issues then he will be looking forward to one more move — to his Forever Home!

Max had an exciting day as he made his way to a animal hospital in Chicago yesterday but he wants to make sure to thank Dr. Mike Divine and his entire staff at Divine Veterinary Clinic in Ozark, Missouri, for the excellent care, treats, belly rubs and hugs he received during his stay there. The entire staff is sure to miss our Max especially Dr. Mike who would come in on his days off just to change Max's bandages.

Max is pretty sure he's still in good hands with his new vet — he thinks she carries dog treats in her pocket! And they seem to do a really good belly rub here in Chicago too!

1/11/11 UPDATE: Max is doing well. His leg wound is almost completely healed and he seems to have full use of his leg! Last week we thought he might need further surgery to amputate a toe and close the wound on his foot but because he had begun his first heartworm treatment, we didn't want to put him through more stress. As it turned out, with continued daily dressing changes, antibiotics and limiting his activity, the wound on his foot is finally closing in.

He tolerated his first heartwork treatment very well and in another two weeks will get his second and third injections. He has also started on the antibiotic doxycycline to address his tick-borne disease ehrlichia.

Despite all his pain, discomfort and limited activity, Max is a happy sweet boy, grateful for the help and support of ESRA and his growing list of friends!

1/30/11 GOOD NEWS UPDATE: Max has completed his treatment for HW disease and ehrlichia and he is ready to find his Forever Home. He will be neutered when his next HW test comes back negative(approximately 3 months). His leg and foot are completely healed and growing hair but sensitive to the cold and he has a slight limp that should disappear with more activity.

He is smart, eager to please, plays with the male and female dog in his foster family and loves his toys — frequently carrying one around with him. He is playful and loves kids. He is working on his leash manners and all aspects of being a good family dog. His ideal family would have a fenced yard for safety, the time, desire and capability to train him,and a stay at home Mom or Dad for companionship.
