ESRA #2009-1126OH
Age: 7 years
Gender: Female
Color: Black and white
Miss Liberty is sporting the pink ribbon — symbolic of the campaign against breast cancer — as ESRA's "poster child" for reminding pet owners to spay/neuter their pets. Read on to see why.
Lovely Liberty came into ESRA's care from an Ohio shelter. She had been used for breeding and was given up when she was no longer "useful." Because she had not been spayed at a young age, she had developed a series of mammary masses, some of which were removed when she was spayed and were found not to be cancerous. Unfortunately, now new masses have arisen and veterinarians advise that Liberty have a complete mastectomy, first on one side, then on the other. She recovered very well from her spay and initial lumpectomy so we feel she will respond well to the mastectomy also.
Liberty's life before she came into ESRA's care must have been hazardous. Routine chest x-rays at the vet revealed the "presence of a metallic foreign body consistent with a gunshot." She also suffers from a condition known as "radius curvus" making her front legs appear Basset-like. Although she has learned to manage without this deformity impeding her movement, it is not a condition that can be corrected at her age. Regular dietary supplements and mild exercise will help keep her mobile.
We want to put Liberty on the road to good health and a wonderful new life. Your kind donations will help!
UPDATE 3/18/2010: Good news! Liberty is graduating from ESRA's Special Needs Program!
Over the past several months, Liberty has undergone a fairly rigorous course of antibiotics. At the beginning of the treatment, the hope was to reduce the size of the lumps and the associated discharge in order to minimize the impact of a major and painful surgical procedure on Liberty. A miraculous change has occurred in Liberty's condition due to the antibiotic treatment. The lumps have reduced themselves to a size smaller than a bb pellet. The associated discharge and discoloration has disappeared as well. As result the veterinarian who has been guiding Liberty's care no longer believes that surgery is the best option. There have been multiple x-rays and biopsies to this point. We cannot begin to express enough gratitude to those who have donated fund for her ongoing care. The generosity of your donations made this possible.
Liberty now has a new lease on life, her attitude is 100% improved and she is ready to go on to her Forever Home with the understanding that she will need her blood work reviewed and lungs x-rayed on a yearly basis to monitor her condition. Liberty will be a sweet, loyal and loving member of a lucky family down the road. Thanks again to everyone who contributed to her fight and her ultimate success!
