Jessie is one of those Very Special Dogs who touches everyone who meets her. Her rescue story began
when
Barbara found Jessie wandering in the street and brought her to safety, realizing immediately that Jessie was blind.
It didn't take long to notice that Jessie was also very hard of hearing. At her first vet visit, we discovered that
along with being blind and functionally deaf, Jessie was also pregnant and heartworm positive. And she's only 4 years
old!
Whatever her past life, her future holds promise. She's so
sweet and loving, trusting and gentle. Her foster dad adores her, and reports that she gets along very well in spite of her
limitations. She has been spayed and is currently undergoing treatment for her heartworms. She's being so good about
everything that it makes helping her a pleasure.
Jessie has a good chance at having her vision restored. We will take her to an eye specialist in the next week for a
test which will tell us if her retinas are healthy. If they are, then it's possible to have surgery to remove the lenses
which are clouded by cataracts. The surgery is very successful at restoring vision, but it costs about $2000 to have both
eyes done.
Any and all donations, no matter the size, can help give Jessie not only her health, but her sight, again. What a
wonderful thing!
Update June 17, 2004
- Jessie's visit to the Eye Specialist on Tuesday gave us some very disappointing news. In addition to the cataracts,
Jessie has Progressive Retinal Atrophy. The doctor was very good, kind and considerate, and he really seems to know his
stuff. Bob felt very comfortable with him, and Jessie breezed through the exam. But the news was just what we dreaded
most.
We still have some options to explore, and will be talking further with the specialists. Meanwhile, Jessie is happy
and content, enjoying each day. This is a photo from her foster dad. He calls it "Now Scratch the Other Ear, Please".
Update August 13, 2004 - Dear Friends of
Jessie,
I'm delighted to announce that Jessie's foster dad, Bob Reardon, will be adopting Jessie permanently!!! Jessie is one
very lucky Springer. First, to have been rescued by Barbara, then to find ESRA, to have all your support and donations to
help her regain her health, and then to be fostered by Bob!
Bob reports that Jessie is much more playful and active since finishing her heartworm treatment and recovery. She's
going for walks on a leash, soliciting play with her "brother" Springer, Walter, and enjoying life to the max.
I'm sure you'll be impressed with the gorgeous dog in the photo now at the top of this page. Bob told me when he picked
her up from the groomer, and saw how beautiful she looked, he was afraid to send out this photo, he knew someone would want
to adopt her. It was then that he also knew for certain that he could never let her go. The bonds with a special needs dog
are very strong. The long road they've been down is now just the start of their lives together. Jessie is definitely a most
special Springer, with an extra special Dad of her very own.
Congratulations, Bob and Jessie!
