I was so very tired of walking.I finally had to rest. I didn't know I was on a busy street, but Elaine knew. She didn't honk like the others, she stopped and called to me. I climbed in her car as best I could with this broken leg. She didn't even mind that I was dirty. She took me home instead of going to work She's a really nice human. So's George. He bathed me (two times! Sheesh!) and spent a really long time cutting the mats out of my hair. And they gave me wonderful food - as much as any dog could want.

But that's not the end of my story - not yet. Elaine and George took me to the rescue group, and now I'm in a foster home with a new Dad. I went to the vet and they did all sorts of tests, and everyone was very happy with me! But I wasn't too happy when they put my leg in a splint. I'm used to hopping, but now I have this Thing on my leg. Oh, well, I heard them say "two weeks" so maybe that's not a long time.

Dad says I have to tell my story. Whatever he wants, I'll do! It's great to have a home, my very own bed, and someone to take care of (Dad needs watching, you know)! I'll let you know how we get along. So far, he seems to like me as much as I like him.

Wags,

Ellie

Update, April 1, 2004: From her foster Dad: "Just a note on Ellie's current condition. She visited the vet yesterday. Her leg is healing well but the splint has to stay on for another two weeks. She seems to be very well house trained, no "accidents" yet."

"Most notable is the change in her disposition. Two weeks ago she was a sad, subdued doggie. She is getting more high-spirited every day and likes to play fetch the ball, even with her bum leg. She has a good appetite, especially if the kibble is laced with cottage cheese, and she has gained two pounds. She wants to thank all the nice people who have made donations for her."

Update, April 15, 2004: Ellie visited the vet April 13th. The vet x-rayed her leg and found no infection or other complications. But the splint has to stay on for 2 more weeks because the bone is still mending. She's a pretty calm dog but she gets excited by loud noises such as thunder and the lawn mower. As you can see by the photo, she is still working hard.

Update, April 27, 2004: Ellie had a vet visit today to check up on her leg. It is healing cleanly and the vet removed the splint that had been in place for about six weeks. The attached photo is the first one since the splint came off. She will have to limit use of the leg for four more weeks, so she will probably be doing some swimming and not much running or walking. They clipped her nails and, now that she can get her leg wet, gave her a badly needed bath. You can see from the photo that she is feeling frisky and is ready to get into some mischief.
