Lovely Darcy needs your help!
Springer Rescue first became aware of Darcy on a Friday when this picture was posted on a shelter's website.
Although an ESRA volunteer called the shelter immediately, she had to stay at the shelter for 3 days awaiting the arrival of an owner who never came.
The following Tuesday was the first day that she could be pulled from the shelter. One of our volunteers was there promptly to pick her up and bring her into our care.
While waiting at the shelter for Darcy to enter the room, the volunteer was excited. This is normally a very gratifying moment for a volunteer as you are about to meet a dog that you can lead down the path to a safe and happy new life. When the doors opened, the volunteer could not believe her eyes. Out walked (or more accurately “limped”) Darcy!
Inevitably, when volunteers work in rescue they begin to build a bit of a “thick skin.” But upon seeing Darcy's condition, this “hardened” volunteer began to cry. She cried out of sympathy, and the dawning realization that this poor dog had been severely injured. Something horrible had happened to her.
Examining her closely, the volunteer parted the hair on the top of her head and discovered that the skin on the top of her head had been split wide open. Also, an injury to her leg and shoulder had left her hardly able to walk.
The volunteer rushed her to the vet, where she was quickly taken in for emergency care. First, a crack medical team evaluated her condition. Then, under anesthesia, her head was stitched up, and four drains were placed under her skin to drain fluid that had accumulated around her injured leg and shoulder.
Luckily her leg was not fractured, although she had sustained a severe pressure bite at the top of her leg/shoulder caused by a dog with powerful jaws. Darcy had been the recipient of a brutal dog attack!
In addition to her other injuries, Darcy suffered from multiple lacerations and puncture wounds to her face, leg, back, neck, head, shoulder, chest and a wound that almost went through her ear.
As one of the many procedures performed during her hospital stay, a heartworm test was performed. Sadly, Darcy has heartworm, so will also need heartworm treatment.
Darcy remained in emergency care for almost a week. She was finally brought into her foster home where she began to recover, both physically and emotionally.
Darcy's foster mom quickly realized that she is the sweetest, kindest, most loveable, motherly girl around. She gets along beautifully with other dogs. She has even adopted Gentle Ben, (listed on the ESRA Texas available dogs) as her own. You can catch them sleeping snuggled up with each other. Ben, being scared and shy, relies on her for guidance and comfort, which she gives freely.
Springer Rescue will see to it that Darcy recovers from her injuries and will tend to her emotional needs. We will also take her through heartworm treatment. But caring for her injuries has put a financial strain on Springer Rescue. We ask that you please consider donating whatever monies that you can to help defray Darcy's significant medical bills. She is worth every single penny spent on her recovery from this brutal attack.
In spite of suffering the emotional pain of abandonment, followed by an equally traumatic physical attack, Darcy's Springer spirit remains true, and it shines through every single day.
We thank you, and Darcy thanks you!
