Our beautiful lemon/white male, Cowboy, needs surgery. His foster mom noticed that over the last few weeks he has been holding his right rear leg up fairly often. He would sometimes put it down gently to walk on it, but most of the time he “hitched” it up. She thought it might just be a pulled muscle or something minor, but was watching it closely. Realizing the situation was not improving and that Cowboy seemed now to almost always hold the leg up, off they went to the vet.
The vet referred Cowboy to specialists at the Surgery Center who explained that Cowboy's knee has basically popped out of the socket. The diagnosis is a genetic condition in both his rear legs that can be corrected with surgery and a six-week recovery period. Without the surgery, Cowboy would eventually be totally lame. His right rear leg is the immediate concern but the left leg will need to undergo the same surgery at some point in the future to ensure that his future is hopeful and filled with gleeful Springer cavorting.
