ESRA was contacted recently by an emergency Veterinary Clinic in the Cincinnati area regarding a 2yr old neutered L/W male named Charlie. Charlie had multiple fractures to his right rear leg as the result of a car
accident. His owners relinquished him to be euthanized citing cost of care as the reason. ($1400) The clinic felt he was too nice a dog to euthanize so they contacted rescue. Charlie's owners agreed to release Charlie
to rescue and he was transported to Columbus Ohio Thursday buy the Emergency Vet who took care of him and initiated the rescue contact. My Vet, Dr. John Cuica, and the Animal Care Center have agreed to do Charlie's
surgery and provide his follow up care at a reduced rate. His practice is also donating medications. Charlie had his surgery Thursday afternoon and did very well despite having a more serious fracture than first thought.
He had multiple displaced fractures of both bones in his right lower leg that required the placement of two pins and a number of wires. A plate could not be placed because there were so many small pieces of bone. As he heals a determination will be made to see if the pins can be removed or if they will be permanent. At this point we are happy that the leg could be saved. Charlie has had previous surgery on the right knee for an anterior cruciate
ligament tear. He also has significant arthritis in both knees for a appears to be in good health otherwise and is hoped to heal with only a slight defect to his leg. His initial recovery is expected to take approximately six weeks. So far his medical costs are approximately $700 the final cost will depend on how the post operative period goes and any complications. The balance of his bill at the emergency clinic was donated by the clinic. When I saw him last evening he was still very sedated from the anesthesia and pain medications. He did open his eyes and respond to his name.
