Hi, my name is Callie . I was found as a stray, taken to a shelter, and then transferred to my foster home. I like the foster home because everyone is so nice to me and it makes me feel very special. Before I came to ESRA I was a mommy (at least once). Since it's impolite to ask a mommy her age, all I'll admit to being is an adult, but my vet thinks I'm about 5 or 6 years old. I am house trained, crate trained, like other dogs, don't mind kitties, and I love people. I am very polite and will do Sit, Down, Shake/paw, Roll over, Speak and Stay. I like to go places and meet people. I get all excited and wiggle my butt around when my foster mom picks up my leash or opens the garage door. I also like chewy treats, squishy balls and stuffed animals. The first night in my foster home I felt a little
lonely so I searched the house until I found just the right fuzzy toy. Then I carried my stuffed baby back to bed and went right to sleep. My foster mommy says I'm a doll and has no idea why anyone would give me up or allow me to get lost.

All of this sounds so wonderful that you're probably wondering why I'm a "Special Needs Springer". Well, ESRA didn't want me to have anymore puppies so they arranged to have me spayed. While the nice doctors were checking me over they found that I had mammary tumors. During my spay operation, the doctors removed a quarter sized lump, anadenocarcinoma, and a small lump (which thankfully was benign). My foster mom says that because of the tumors I'm now a "Special Needs Springer" and I'm going to see a specialist so I can get the care I need. I must be pretty darn special for ESRA to take such good care of me!

Notes from Callie's foster mom:

Canine mammary tumors are very similar to breast cancer in women. Spaying your dog early is the best preventative against this disease. Each heat cycle or pregnancy a female dog experiences increases the risk of developing tumors. Fortunately many of the tumors are benign. Unfortunately not all of them are as is Callie's case. Callie is a sweet, happy, loving, gentle springer. She is very appreciative of everything you do for her. We'd love to help Callie stay as health and happy as she is now. Won't you help us to help Callie fight this disease by sponsoring her? Or maybe even adopting her so she can have the loving Forever Home she deserves? We are hoping with further treatment Callie will be cured. Only time will tell. She is getting the best possible care.

Callie was transported to Ohio on December 28th so she can receive the special oncology care she needs in hopes that she will have a complete recovery. She will need the support and sponsorship from as many kind people as possible for this to happen.

Update 01/08/04: Very good news, indeed! Callie's oncologist reports that her follow-up exam showed that the surgery to remove Callie's tumor apparently is a complete success, and there is no evidence that the cancer spread elsewhere in her body. Lungs are clear, as are lymph nodes. Of course, it's still a matter of keeping a vigilant watch on her, probably for the rest of her (likely long) life.As a result, we will be upgrading her status soon to "Available for Adoption". Thanks go out to Callie's generous sponsors, who really came through for ESRA for her very expensive medical treatment.
