Burt – Robins, IA

ESRA Special Needs Springer

ESRA #2010-353 IA
Age: One year
Gender: Male
Color: Black and white

Burt is a young Springer who has had a rough few months as a puppy. His original home did not provide him with a fenced yard — he liked to chase cars — you can imagine what comes next in his story. He was hit by a car and suffered a bad break in his left rear leg.

His owner gave him up because of the high cost of the surgery needed to repair the leg. The vet contacted ESRA. That is how Burt came to be in the care of our rescue organization.

The vet inserted a pin into Burt's leg and the leg began to mend. We assumed, following a normal recuperation period, little Burt would be just fine and ready to look for his Forever Home. The story doesn't follow that script, however.

When Burt returned to the vet to have the pin removed, it was clear from the x-rays that the leg still had a lot of healing to do. The x-rays surprisingly showed that Burt's right rear leg was broken also! The second break had not been noticeable initially but because Burt was using the right rear leg so much to compensate for the extreme pain in his left rear leg, the second break became worse! Now little Burt needs to undergo surgery a second time — this time on what had been thought to be "his good leg."

These economic times are just as bad for ESRA as they are for all of us and our families and friends. We want to rally for Burt and allow him to have a normal life like any young Springer deserves. He has endured more pain than any of us would care to think about. His foster homes have been saints giving him the constant care and nurturing that he needs to heal, but now we need to reach out to our ESRA friends and ask for their help as well. Please share Burt's story with your family and friends and help us raise additional funds to pay for Burt's care.

We will proudly list the names of Burt's donors here along with their "get well wishes" and updates on his road to recovery.

JUNE 12, 2010 UPDATE: Burt had his surgery a week ago and he is doing OK. He was up and walking on his rear right leg within hours even though it was slow. It might take up to three months for him to recover but each day he makes a little progress. He is in good spirits and enjoys the company of the resident Springers at his foster mom's home. His leg will be shorter than the other one and that hip will be located higher than it was originally. He was a good candidate for this type of surgery because he is so young and can heal quickly. Thanks to everyone who is supporting him with their donations, positive thoughts, and prayers. He appreciates everything that you are doing for him.
