Brogan came to us via a breeder who had a
litter of eight puppies, two of which had a heart problem diagnosed as PDA (Patent Ductus Arteriosus). ESRA agreed to take
the dogs, and take care of their health issues, if the owner relinquished them. It was very nice of the breeder to contact
us, considering she had over-bred her dogs to the point of congenital birth defects. Brogan was weak, but friendly, and we
took him immediately to Michigan State University Veterinary Clinical Center. There, his PDA was corrected surgically, and
the vets felt he would have no more complications associated with his PDA.
With his pre-operative exam, Brogan was found to have some potential vision problems. He does have good
vision at this time. He has juvenile cataracts, but they have not progressed. They could potentially lead to blindness, and
surgical removal of them at that time might be a good option. However, these congenital cataracts do not typically progress
to that point. Furthermore, Brogan has Retinal Dysplasia which potentially can cause blindness in the future. Also, there
is a potential for Brogan to develop Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) at 4-6 years of age, but there is no way to detect
that at this time.
Brogan came home from the hospital to his foster home,
and has adjusted well to the other dogs. He started out weak and slow from the surgery, but is recovering on schedule, and
now almost keeps up with the big dogs.
It has been very expensive for ESRA to save little Brogan's life. As you can imagine, despite it being a world-class
veterinary training facility, his heart surgery at Michigan State was very expensive for us. We need special people who can
financially support our care of him. Can you help ESRA help Brogan live a normal, happy, Springer life?
Thanks.
