ANNIE - Miami, FL
ESRA Case Manager: June Davis, jrd727@aol.com
- Age = 4 months old
- Gender = Female
- Color = Black/White
|
"Annie",
as in Lil' Orphan, is a sweet 4 month old female English Springer Spaniel
who was dropped off at a Miami veterinary clinic after being hit by a
car. The person leaving her provided no names, no details and no money
to treat Annie's injuries.
Upon further examination it was determined she had a severly
broken femur, the large upper leg bone. Fortunately, a local cocker spaniel
rescuer named Sue who donates time at this clinic fell in love with Annie
and contacted Florida ESRA for help.
Annie had her operation on 1/17/02. Her surgery entailed some
fancy crisscross wiring as the break was high on the leg. And here is
what Sue reports:
1/16/02 - Pre Operation
The little puppy that we have been speaking about will go into surgery
tomorrow. She will be under the care of Dr. Wise who is our Chief orthopaedic
surgeon at Knowles Animal clinic. "Annie" will need extensive
surgery as the distal of the femur, the tip, will have to be wired and
screws placed to keep it in place. The growth plate is involved and being
she is just a baby, care needs to be taken. I may need some help fostering
her but right now I am okay to do it. She is a dear little thing and was
so happy when I brought her a toy to play with today. I sing to her and
she just melts. The estimate is $1200-1500, we will know more once they
get into her little leg. My Cocker Rescue is willing to share some of
the expense $200-300.
1/17/02
- Post Operation
I just spoke with Dr Wise and Annie is okay. She is wagging her tail and
is alert but is on some pain meds. Her prognosis is good, the knee was
shattered and had to be rebuilt. Dr. Wise said this is the worst blowout
he has seen in all his years of practice except for one other a long time
ago. The hit must have been direct. He rebuilt the entire knee which took
2 hours, and normally a fracture on the femur is a 45 minute job. I have
known Dr. Wise for many, many years and can say that he cares deeply for
the animals and I know his skills are tops. Ask all for prayers that she
recovers to normal mobility. I am on my way to get pictures for you.
English Springer Rescue America, Inc. is seeking donations to
assist us in covering Annie's veterinary expenses. Won't you sponsor or donate
to Annie's care today?
Update
1/24/02:
Annie is doing well and better and better each day. She has begun to put a
bit of pressure on her leg and the swelling is going down. She saw the Dr.
and he said we do not have to return until next Monday.
She is sporting a very large Elizabethan collar.......as the
first night she figured it would be cool to take out her stitches, and she
can be a bit of an acrobat when she wants to get to them! She is gaining weight,
I cannot feel her ribs as prominently as I did in the past few days.
Annie captured the hearts of so many people and I am happy to
say that she is a good little girl and certainly deserves the 2nd chance you
have given
her. I do not have a complete list of the cost for everything all tolled as
we still need x-rays each week until we know she is well on her way to complete
and total recovery.
She gets prettier and prettier each day as her gaunt little face
begins to fill out. Her leg feathers are growing and she lost another baby
tooth tonight after her dinner. She is so delighted to see anyone that she
almost shakes herself silly. She tries to stand on one leg to "visit". Her
walks are still short and sweet as we do not want to overdo it and risk falling.
The towel under her belly helps her keep her balance and she doesn't mind
it at all. She and I send our love and gratitude to all that are helping her.
Update 1/30/02:
Annie went for her weekly X-ray yesterday to check on her healing process.
She has gained 3 lbs, so she now weighs 17 lbs. We expect rehab to be
4 more weeks. Foster Mom was taught how to walk her forward and backward
holding a towel under her for support. Her E-Collar is off now, and she
has lost all her baby teeth. She has a wonderful apetite, and particularly
enjoyed the part she had of a Dairy Queen on her way home from the vet.
Foster Mom said when she looked at the Xray it looks like 8 pins along
with wire were placed in Annie. It was quite an extensive operation, but
she sure is worth it!
Update
2/23/02:
Annie is doing just great! The 2nd week of February, she went in for a
bit more surgery......to remove two of the pins that were causing her
movement to be restricted. Now everything is freed up and her energy level
is rising. Her foster home is starting to teach her some simple obedience
commands. She has only been allowed off lead for short times as nothing
stops her from getting what she wants and going where she wants when off
lead. She is a happy little pup......loves kids, other dogs, and everyone
she meets. She thinks Henry the cat is her best friend, but Henry does
not think so! Her stitches were removed yesterday (2/22/02) and the Doctor
said she is healing nicely. He believes she is more than likely going
to be a small springer, which is just fine since she had all this surgery.
There is a family in Miami that expressed an interest in adopting Annie...almost
since the beginning. They had a springer in the past. He is an Orthopedic
Surgeon (for humans) and offered to assist Annie's Doctor during her operation.
The family has made formal application, and is now going through our Florida
adoption process of telephone interviews, vet.reference checks, and Home
visit. The file of inquiries wanting to adopt Annie is huge, from all
over the US. It's been really difficult to keep up with the answers. We
thank you so very much for all your kindness and concerns about Annie.
If there is any change in this situation, I will post it immediately....and
start through that file! We expect in a couple of weeks she could be ready
for a "forever home."
