In July, Springer Rescue got an usual call from a shelter in Chapel Hill,
NC. While it's not unusual to get a call about a Springer needing "bail"
from a shelter, it IS shocking to find out about a group of seven dogs
found together, milling around on the side of the road! ESRA volunteers
decended on the group and we assessed them, took pictures, bathed and
groomed them, and scrambled for foster care and adopters. They all emerged
from the shelter, all spayed/neutered, with their shots, microchips, and
with kennel cough that errupted several days later.
One of the
Springers, Abby, has had the toughest time. She was the only one of the
bunch who was positive for
heartworms, and was not spayed. She rapidly became quite sick and had
to be rushed to the emergency vet.
She had pneumonia and was vomiting severely. She stayed hospitalized for
3 days and 2 nights with i.v. ,meds and hydration. . She is pulling through
slowly this week, (the week of August 17th).
Abby is middle-aged, perhaps 6 - 8 years old, the oldest of the entire
bunch. She is a sweet, highly affectionate girl, according to her foster
mom. She got to go to foster care along with one of the other girls, Callie.
They are like two peas in a pod! They are learning their potty training
quickly, and both are eating healthy now and settling in, learning about
how good life is in the house! It's seems to be entirely new to them!
Abby still has some battles ahead of her... heartworm treatment, and
getting her teeth in better shape, and getting spayed. All of the dogs
had horrible back teeth--mostly likely from eating only moist food, as
all of them showed an initial dislike of dry food.
Update 11/8/03: Abby had her first round of heartworm treatment
a few
weeks ago and is sailing through it quite well. She will receive one more
set of injections later this month. After remaining "quiet"
for about 8 weeks in total, she'll be done. Luckily she is a sweet, low-key
kind of girl so it hasn't been too hard. I bet she will enjoy finally
getting some off-leash time, though!
We have found a new mom for Abby who is eagerly awaiting her to be ready.
Yeah for Abby! She'll be staying in the Triangle area, over in Wake Forest.
Again, thanks for your financial support for her to allow our organization
to care for wonderful Springers like Abby!
Update: December 23, 2003: I adopted
Abby from ESRA of the Carolinas, and renamed her Flikka (means "little
girl" in Swedish). Flikka is doing great. She has adjusted so well.
We went for a car ride to PetsMart and to the Post Office and she waggled
her head out the window at the other cars and her ears flew back. On Christmas
Day, we are invited to Kitty Hawk, (via a private plane) and she will
have a whole beach to run on! What a Christmas gift she is! I am so grateful
that Rescue gave her back a healthy life. Merry Christmas to all!
