HAPPY ENDINGS!

Stonewall

Three years ago I was asked by ESRA to pull a Springer boy from the shelter and foster him until permanent arrangements could be made. Weighing in at nearly 70 lbs.(though he is not fat), this guy was the biggest Springer I have ever seen, so I named him "Stonewall."

Poor Stoney was in terrible shape when I took him from the shelter; he had Kennel Cough, was covered in huge ticks, had several rotten teeth and a severe nasal infection. He also had trouble making it up the stairs, probably a result of arthritis. Stoney endured a 5-hour surgery, having teeth extracted and his ears and nose irrigated, after which our vets discovered that his nasal passages had all but deteriorated and his skull was wired together in three places, as a result of some previous head trauma. He was so terrified of new people that he had accidents regularly out of fear.

Needless to say, I "failed" the foster process and adopted Stoney less than a month after I took him in. When people, including our vet, see Stoney now, they can hardly believe he's the same dog I brought home from the shelter. Though he is approximately ten or eleven, he certainly doesn't act like it, especially when he's surfing my kitchen counter! Although he will have constant ear and nasal infections for the rest of his life, he is otherwise healthy and very, very happy. He loves to chase birds and squirrels and frequently plays tug-o-war with his younger springer brother, Julep. Though Stoney understandably has a lot of anxiety issues, he is the most loyal and grateful dog I have ever known. His little tail wags constantly and he rarely leaves my side. I'm so happy to have my springers and will always be a proud supporter of ESRA!
